We have all been there. All of us. We have all come up with a great idea but usually we get stuck on the next phase—How to get if off the ground. Earlier we talked about managing the risk through rigorous analysis. But the other lesson we learned first hand was the importance of teamwork. Embrace it, seek it out. There are a lot of subject matter experts who are masters at what they do while you are a jack of all trades. And never forget that you don’t know what you don’t know. Lesson? Seek out experts at every stage of a start-up project. We did that with MakeBeliever and we would not have done it any other way. We are actually quite proud that we, when necessary, sought out the appropriate professionals and have engaged people in this project from places as diverse as the US, England, Belgium, France, the Bahamas, Bulgaria and Norway—and the North Pole of course. All experts in a particular area, be it text to speech, animation compositing, BLOG functionality, PR, pricing, etc.
So a great idea is a great start. But to get it off the ground acknowledge that you don’t know what you don’t know; Seek out the perspectives from as many different angles as you can imagine. Do that and you will cut off a lot of problems at the pass.
